Most of our recipients are local families on government subsidies whose food stamp benefits do not suffice for an entire month. As these food stamps run out by the third week of the month, Rahima steps in to supplement basic food items such as rice, flour, grains, pasta, cooking oil, tuna , meat and fresh produce(seasonal vegetables and fruits). In order to be fair and equitable to all our recipients, we purchase the items in bulk and distribute the same items to all the families.
Mainly our clients are residents of south bay, but we also assist people from neighboring communities such as Union City, Fremont, Hayward, San Lorenzo, Oakland, Concord, Richmond, Alameda, and San Francisco. All food items are purchased with donations received by Rahima.
As of April 2004, we streamline the partnership between Rahima and Second Harvest Food Bank has gone into effect. By purchasing through Second Harvest Food Bank, we were able to increase our average tonnage distributed from 5-6 tons to 8-9 tons per month. This new partnership has also allowed us to incorporate fresh produce items into our menu such as onions, potatoes and lettuce. Today we are focusing on giving a more complete diet to the entire family by incorporating protein, vitamins, calcium, fiber, etc. We have also had success in distributing fresh produce along with fruits to our clients. On an average, we are distributing close to 50-60pounds of food per family.
