Ramadan 1, 1434

July 10, 2013

Dear Rahima Supporter, Assalaam Aleykum.

We are entering once again, the holiest month of the year, Ramadan. We may not know all the names of the months of our Islamic calendar, but we have known Ramadan since we were little, we always knew that this month is special.

So we like to wish you and your family the many blessings this holy month brings. The days are getting longer and hotter, and we pray as we go through fasting these long days without any complaints, that Allah SWT will reward us with even more hasanat.

Although our dua’s during this holy month can be many, we are guided to ask for His Rahma (Mercy) in the first 10 days, His Forgiveness in the middle 10 days, and to be freed from the hell fire in the last 10 days.

So you see this holy month of Ramadan starts with His Rahma, which is a great blessing for all of us. Insha Allah this Rahma will not only make it easy and comfortable for us to fast, but will also charge our spiritual batteries and bring us closer to Him. With His Rahma He will insha Allah forgive us, save us from the hell fire, and enter us in Paradise.

What is encouraged a great deal during these holy days is Sadaqah. And Sadaqah is much more than giving money, or a portion of our material possessions. Did you know that there is Sadaqah of our joints and bones? In the Monterey County Masjid, the khateeb on Friday mentioned a hadith regarding Sadaqah which I had not heard before:

“On every person’s joint or small bones there is Sadaqah (charity) due every day when the sun rises. Doing justice between two people is Sadaqah; assisting a man to mount his animal, or lifting up his belongings onto it is Sadaqah; a good word is Sadaqah; every step you take towards prayer is Sadaqah; and removing harmful things from pathways is Sadaqah” [Muslim].

The khateeb mentioned that there are 360 joints in our body and therefore we need to do at least 360 acts of Sadaqah on a daily basis. Reciting Allah’s Names, giving Shukr and Praises to Him are all counted towards Sadaqah, as is a smile, and our time and skills we give in the service of others

Speaking of service, in the Bay Area, there are many opportunities to serve. Alhamdulillah, many of us have good jobs and live comfortably with our families; however, there are many people suffering from financial hardships due to job loss, and inability to work due to lack of right skills, language (refugees from other countries), health, or other issues.

They need our help with food, and financial assistance to take care of their basic and immediate needs, until they can stand on their own feet.

For the past 20 years Rahima Foundation has been helping hundreds of families regularly throughout the year, by distributing tons of food every month and providing financial assistance to the most needy. We are very grateful to you for your continued support to help these folks in our local communities. Although the need exists everywhere, we are told by scholars that the priority is to take care of people in our own local communities first.

Please be generous in this blessed month to give Sadaqah, and pay your zakat-ul-maal and zakat-ul-fitr (fitra) early, so we can help those in need have a more comfortable Ramadan, and be able to enjoy the blessings of fasting and to celebrate Eid with their families.

A quick update on some of our programs:

  1. Soup Kitchen Project is continuing twice a month at InnVision in downtown San Jose, where we provide and serve dinner to ~125 homeless individuals who, along with the staff of InnVision, can’t seem to stop thanking us, and showing their appreciation for the delicious and nutritious meal (catered through the Holyland Restaurant in Santa Clara), as well as the friendly service they have become accustomed to. Several families are now sponsoring this project with their generous donations, and some even volunteer at the event they sponsor. This is true and sincere service to make the lives of the less fortunate a little bit easier.
  2. Need-Based Assistance to High School and College Students was also started and several students are being helped already.

Rahima Foundation started it’s services in Ramadan 1993, twenty years ago. The 21st of Ramadan will mark our 20th year of service in the Bay Area. We have recognized that this need will not only continue in our communities and elsewhere, but new programs will need to be added.

So in order to continue these and other programs long after we have left this world, we are working to set up a Rahima Endowment Program. This program will allow you to participate in Sadaqah Jariyeh for yourself and / or other members of your family through monetary gifts, gifts of property or other valuables; either in your lifetime or placed in your will to be given to Rahima Foundation.

Since we are rewarded according to our intentions, I hope you will make the intention in this holy month, that in addition to your zakat, fitra, and sadaqah, you will take part in this Sadaqah Jariyeh by participating in the Rahima Endowment Program.

Insha Allah you will be receiving more information about this new and important program in a separate mailing later in Ramadan.

As we mentioned in the Rajab letter, Rahima Foundation is looking to move into a new and larger facility. This is important since we are very limited in our current facilities to even continue the expansion of existing programs, e.g. monthly food distribution, let alone start new and needed programs like Senior Care, Medical Clinic, Skills Training, English Language classes, etc.

Any help in this area through Sadaqah, or through the Endowment Program will be greatly appreciated.

Enclosed you will find our new calendar covering Ramadan 2013 to Shaban 2014, which we hope you will find useful and attractive.

At Rahima Foundation we appreciate your continued support very much, and we pray that all your good deeds will bring multiple hasanat.

May Allah accept our fastings, prayers, and charity in this blessed month.

Please pray for all the Rahima Foundation staff and volunteers for the humble effort we are making to attain Allah SWT’s Divine Pleasure.

Jazak Allahu Kheyrun,
